Ultramarine is a deep blue color pigment which was originally made by grinding lapis lazuli into a powder. The name comes from the Latin ultramarinus, literally "beyond the sea", because the pigment was imported into Europe from mines in Afghanistan by Italian traders during the 14th and 15th centuries.
Iron oxide is the most common colorant in ceramics and has the highest amount of iron. It is available commercially as a soft and very fine powder made by grinding ore material or heat processing ferrous/ferric sulphate or ferric hydroxide.
Uses:
Coatings / Colorants for Rubber / Adhesives / Plastics / Concrete
As a density media, and as a polishing rouge
Can be tinted with titanium dioxide to create different pink shades.
The overwhelming application of iron oxide is as the feedstock of the steel and iron industries, e.g. the production of pure iron, steel, and many alloys.
